A Gentleman and A Lady
Lou Rogers
A certain older Jewish fellow was out walking one hot summer day on the edge of town in a secluded area along side a little creek. It was a very hot day and the water looked so inviting to him that he decided it would be nice to wade in and cool off. He took off his hat and all his clothes, put them on a stump and waded in. He sat there in the cool water, leaned back, closed his eyes and dozed.
When he awoke he realized it was getting on towards evening. So out of the water he came and over to the stump where he left his clothes.
Lo’ and behold!!--no clothes!…-someone had stolen all his clothes---leaving him only his hat.
Disgustedly, he picked up his hat and said to himself, “at least I can cover myself---and maybe no one will be out in their yards to see me when I pass by.”
It just so happen that on the street where he lived, he had to walk up a little hill to get to his house. Holding his hat down to cover "himself" he walked along quickly, praying with every step that no one would be out in the yard to see him pass by as he made his way up the hill towards home.
He was nearing his house thinking no one was seeing him in his birthday-suit, when suddenly, he saw his neighbor, a little old Jewish lady sitting and rocking on her front porch.
As he neared her house, he picked up his pace, looking straight ahead and covered himself with his hat as best he could, and kept walking.
The little lady, of course, had spotted him and his hat coming from along way down the street. When he got nearly in front of her house, she stopped rocking, stood up to see better over her picket fence, and just stared at him holding his hat in place, as he waddled along.
He noticed her standing up and staring, and of course, it terribly embarrassed him, and upset him too.
He stopped in front of her house and quietly said to her, “If you were a lady, you wouldn’t stare at me!”
Just as quiet as he, she spoke right back at him, “Yes--- and if you were a gentlemen, you would tip your hat!”
