The Old Steam Engine

Lamar Rogers

I’m just an old steam engine sitting here in the station.

I’ve worked many years helping build this great nation.

The engineer just gave me some steam and you’ve heard my voice.

I must get ready to go now but to where, I have no choice.

I have a conductor back there somewhere I know.

He gets his orders and tells me where to go.

The fireman just filled my belly with big chunks of coal.

Now I’m feeling the fire deep down in my soul.

Step up closer now boys and girls and I’ll make a sound for you.

When my big wheels start turning I’ll go: Chu – Chu – Chu.

Now step back a little and you’ll see my smoke.

It’s black as coal and that’s no joke.

I’m getting up some speed now as I race along the track

And you’re hearing another sound, Clickity Clack – Clickity Clack.

You may hear my whistle some night from your bed.

And think it’s sad enough to awaken the dead.

You may think I’m lonesome or bored but really I’m neither.

I’m just trying to awaken my driver!

I’m carrying a big load to be delivered and I must not fail.

Some of it just might be your mail!

The next time you hear my whistle blowing out here in the dark,

Just remember that I really have a great big, warm heart!
